Non-Warranty Repairs

TEC Services can perform non-warranty repairs on virtually any brand and model of computer. The only factors that limit our ability to repair a specific model/brand of computer are the availability of replacement parts and the necessary system restore disks (needed in the event the operating system, device drivers, and other system essential files must be reinstalled on the hard drive). Labor costs for performing the majority of repairs and other types of services for your computer are assessed using a reasonable, fixed-fee labor schedule. Parts costs will be burdened with Georgia state sales tax (Clarke County rate of 7%) when repairs are conducted on computers that are privately owned by UGA students, faculty, and staff.

A non-refundable diagnostic fee of $75 for Apple, Dell and Lenovo brand computers and $87.50 for all other brands will be collected when the service request is initiated. If you decide to proceed with the repair following receipt of the estimate, the diagnostic fee will be applied toward the total cost of the repair. In the event that you   choose not to continue with the repair, the diagnostic fee is retained to cover the labor cost for diagnosing the computer fault(s).

In specific non-warranty repair scenarios, you can realize a cost savings for a repair if we send the laptop computer to one of our service partners. This is especially true in situations where the cost of a particular part is relatively high or when it is difficult to locate and procure the required components within a reasonable period of time. If it becomes more cost effective to send the laptop to one of our service partners, TEC Services will assess a $100 fee to facilitate the repair. As with facilitated warranty repairs, the facilitation fee provides the following services:

  • Initial diagnostic screening to assure that the notebook malfunction is a result of a defective hardware component. If the computer problem is a result of a software-related issue, TEC Services can perform the necessary repair.
  • Packaging the notebook to industry standards and shipping it to the service partner using 2nd Day Air shipping priority.
  • Tracking the progress of the repair while the laptop is at the service partner’s facility.
  • Receiving the repaired laptop into the TEC Services’ facility.
  • Conducting a performance check of the repaired system to ensure that the system performs to factory specifications and all customer-reported problems were addressed.

Non-warranty repairs that are performed in our service facility are completed within an average of 4 to 6 business days. The availability of parts is often the factor that tends to lengthen repair cycles.
